We are actually in front of the curve rather than behind the curve- Fiifi Kwetey

The general secretary of the current major opposition party National Democratic Congress, Hon. Fiifi Kwetey appeared on Talking Point on 23rd June to have a discussion with Morris Ogbetey regarding the NDC election 2024 campaign Team.

When asked about the new initiatives he has brought on board after his election as the general secretary, Fiifi Kwetey said the following.

“I prefer really at this stage, 5 months to election not really be focusing on campaign ahead of becoming general secretary. Those conversations are long gone. I prefer to focus on what really need to achieve, and what is to achieve is to get the results, and to ensure that those results are properly collated on time, and I’m sure you would have noticed for example that in the bye-election that we have had, the most recent one being the Assin bye-election, we were not just ahead of the Electoral Commission, but we were ahead of our opponents as far as the collation of the results concern, so these are things that clearly we leave no stone unturned to deliver. I will say that you can’t deliver your mandate unless you have a party that is properly united, and we have made efforts to keep ourselves very united. We keep ourselves also to restore high levels of discipline in the party, and that for me is non-negotiable. Also we have made efforts to ensure that everybody appreciates that the party is number one, ahead of individuals. so situations that individuals place themselves ahead of the party is going to be a thing of the past.”

When asked whether the NDC have been slow in executing their campaign considering the fact that the party elected John Mahama back in 2022, and yet have slowed down in the campaign activities, Mr. Kwetey had this to say.

“I can understand that, but the truth is if you check historically there is no political party that actually launches campaign before July. Even in the elections that we have won or even in oppositions we outdoor our, we are actually in front of the curve rather than behind the curve. I can appreciate that people naturally are a lot in hurry, but there is really no need for a hurry, because we really need to do is to ensure that we follow the processes properly. The announcement of the campaign team has been on course, after that we will go ahead and launch the campaign and also launch the manifesto, then we are in a position to actually hit the ground”

Regarding a question about whether the NDC is following the campaign moves of the vice president the general secretary said “it is normal to keep an eye on what your opponent is doing, but remember that what he is doing is actually following what has already been done by our flag bearer, going around all the 16 regions of the country, meeting different groups, doing proper listening tour, so what it is that you see the flag bearer of the NPP doing is just basically copying what has been done by our party”

“Our campaign is going to be a bit of both, but I will say it is going to be more retail in nature. Retail in this case means reaching out to those who matter, those who are going to vote, but of course there is going to be some collective programs interms of rallies and movements”

The general secretary added that the country needs a serious and experienced leader in the person of John Mahama who can take steps to revive the economy to help the ordinary Ghanaian. He indicated that government reducing its expenditure is the basic step to reviving the economy, something this Nana Addo-Bawumia administration has failed to do over the years.

Reducing accumulational debt by formulating policies and implementing projects that take the pressure off the government, so that the government does not engage in consistent borrowing. This he said is also another move to help stabilize and reduce the hardship in the economy.
